Flashing images in InDesign, grey images in InCopy

I saw this yesterday on a sub-editor’s PC but would not have believed it if I hadn’t seen it for myself. After the sub had zoomed in to an InDesign page layout, the pictures (and there were a lot of them) appeared to be flashing on and off. When the same user opened a story from those pages in InCopy, the pictures were all greeked out as grey boxes…
